A new SOPRAN project is being launched by BISP in 7 districts across the country.

The 8171 BISP Program has issued a new update for eligible individuals and impoverished families. This update introduces the SOPRAN project, which aims to improve the nutritional growth of adolescent girls and provide them with necessary food supplements to combat environmental and physical illnesses. The initial phase of this project will cover seven significant districts in Pakistan, with plans for expansion nationwide as it gains popularity and success.
BISP launches Benazir SOPRAN Project
As part of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), the National Steering Committee for the Adolescent Girls’ Nutrition project met for the first time on Monday.
A meeting was held to discuss the SOPRAN project, which uses social protection programs to improve the nutritional status of teenage girls and provides them with the tools to become change agents in their communities, chaired by Naveed Akbar, Director General BISP (NSER/CCT).

Teenage girls will be able to play a significant role as change agents in their families by increasing awareness, improving eating habits, and enhancing intergenerational communication through this new initiative.

Importance Of SOPRAN Project For The Health Of Adolescent Girls
Due to the fact that Naveed Akbar presided over the meeting, he stressed the importance of addressing the pervasive malnutrition among teenage girls in Pakistan. Over half of girls suffer from anemia, and a significant percentage also lack other micronutrients, so this program is vital and relevant.
Through the use of iron-folic acid supplements, the Director General stressed the importance of integrating nutrition into social protection. The project’s success was also attributed to cross-sectoral collaboration in health, education, and social protection.

As part of the project goals, Dr. Franz von Roenne from GIZ and other important partners explained that iron and folate supplements would be provided, wheat flour would be enhanced nutritionally, and regional players in nutrition, health, and education would be developed.
In his closing remarks, Naveed Akbar stressed the importance of continuous cooperation and district- and province-level coordination to ensure the success of the project.
