The August electric bill increase is still awaiting approval

NEPRA granted K-Electric’s petition last month for provisional monthly fuel charge adjustments (FCA) for July 2024 at PKR 3.03 per unit. The amount will appear on client invoices in December 2024.

As a result of adjustments to the generating mix and fluctuations in fuel costs, utility fuel charges change. These expenses were shown on the consumer bill after they were examined and approved by NEPRA. When global fuel prices decline, customers also benefit from lower FCA on their bills. The Federal Government notifies NEPRA of the rates applied to client bills.

Category Of Consumers Not To Pay FCA Charges

The FCA will apply to all consumer groups except:

  • prepaid metering customers,
  • lifeline customers,
  • and electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS).

Formerly known as Karachi Electric Supply Company Limited, the electricity company plays a crucial role in one of the world’s most densely populated cities. Under the leadership of KES Power Limited, who owns the majority stake in KE, a turnaround plan was implemented in 2009, attracting investments exceeding USD 4.1 billion. As a result, KE has increased its generation capacity by 1,057 MW and boosted its transmission and distribution capacity by 29% and 60%, respectively. Moreover, there has been a significant reduction of 15.5% points in transmission and distribution losses.

In conclusion

As a result of K-Electric’s recent adjustment, Karachi consumers will see higher electricity bills in November, with an additional Rs. 2.17 per unit and a separate quarterly adjustment of Rs. 1.74 per unit. In spite of helping to cover rising fuel costs, these adjustments place a financial burden on residents.
