Subsidy difference in electricity bills to be covered by provincial government

It has been requested by the Punjab government that the distribution firms estimate the costs involved in implementing the Rs14 per unit reduction for Iesco, Mepco, Gepco, Fesco, and Lesco customers who use between 201 and 500 units of electricity. The distribution companies have calculated and requested a subsidized charge; the provincial government has stated that it will cover the difference between the original bill and the proposed amount.

The Companies must submit the complete information to the Government by Monday.

Update on electricity relief for limited consumers

Using official data, only 14% of electricity consumers use more than 200 units of electricity per month. This means that 86% do not qualify for this subsidy since they use less than 200 units per month.

The government’s initial expectations of widespread relief from rising electricity costs may not be met since the subsidy only targets a small portion of the population.

In conclusion

The Punjab government has announced a relief of Rs. 14 per unit for electricity consumers using between 200 and 500 units. In order to implement this, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz sent official letters to five of the largest electricity companies in Pakistan, including IESCO, MEPCO, GEPCO, FESCO, and LESCO. This relief, however, is only available to a small group, which raises concerns about its wider impact.
