To boost crops production, Punjab launches Rs 6Bn project to form 33 Groups Of Farmers

Here is the latest announcement by the Punjab Government for the agricultural sector and all residents of the Province, the government plans to launch a new project of corporate farming to increase the production of two main crop items, onions, and tomatoes so that Punjabis can afford them throughout the year and can control the rising prices of these food items in this way.

The Punjab government has launched a Rs. 6 billion project to establish 33 farmer entrepreneurship groups, benefiting 450 members.

Punjab government launches a project to form 33 farmer groups

To increase the availability of tomatoes and onions throughout the year, the government has announced that it will initiate a new project for all farmers in Punjab. This project aims to increase the production of these two most important crops.

Punjab has started a project worth Rs 6 billion to form 33 farmer enterprise groups made up of 450 farmers and to plant 17,500 acres of onion and tomato crops both seasonally and off-seasonally.

As a result of off-season growing, groups of 5 to 10 farmers who grow vegetables will receive subsidies for solarization, drip irrigation, fertilizers, and seeds. There won’t be any artificial production because onions and tomatoes will be available locally in Punjab for six months.

Planting of seasonal and off-season crops on 17,500 acres

So that their yields will look accordingly and cultivation can be done with a maximum profit, the Punjab Government has decided to divide the lands into seasonal and off-seasonal cultivation of tomato and onion crops separately.

Cultivation of onions seasonally and off-seasonally

There will be 2500 acres under non-seasonal cultivation in Vehari, Khanewal, and Rahim Yar Khan districts, and 9,000 acres under seasonal onion production in Lodhran, Multan, and Rajanpur districts.

Tomato Cultivation Seasonal & Off-Season

2500 acres will be used for non-seasonal tomato planting in Khushab, Chakwal, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, and DG Khan, and 3500 acres for seasonal tomato planting in Muzaffargarh, Rahim Yar Khan, and Sheikhupura.

Additional Aids Will Be Provided To The Farmers 

As part of the initiative, the World Bank will also provide cold storage, machinery, agricultural equipment, nursery plants, and tomato and onion seeds.

The strategy was developed as a result of Punjab’s chief minister, Maryam Nawaz, so that customers would always be able to access high-quality vegetables at a reasonable price. Additionally, the senior individuals in attendance guarantee that growers will receive all the assistance necessary to meet the project’s objectives.

According to Kirmani, farmers will be given subsidies for solar systems and modern farm equipment to increase the amount of potatoes and onions grown both seasonally and year-round.

Farmer’s Field Schools To Be Introduced In Punjab

Despite the fact that technical training for the Farmer Enterprise Group will be provided through quality improvement, climate-smart agriculture, regenerative agriculture, and post-harvest techniques, Farmer Field School will be used for farmer capacity building.

Predicted Onion and Tomato Production

Apparently, this initiative will result in a 28,500-ton increase in onions’ seasonal and non-seasonal production, and a 39,000-ton increase in tomatoes’ seasonal and non-seasonal production.
